TOCFL Speedy Screening

The Speedy Screening Listening and Reading tests adopt a multistage adaptive testing framework similar to the GRE developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The system is divided into three stages: the first stage presents test items from a mixed range of difficulty levels. Based on the test takers’ performance in the first stage, the test in the second stage presents test items that meet the proficiency levels of the individual test takers. The items in the third stage are chosen based on the performance in the second stage. Finally, the system assesses the test takers’ proficiency based on the overall performance in all three stages and presents the test result.

TOCFL Speedy Screening Speaking Test adopts a two-stage testing structure. In the first stage, test items of various difficulty levels are provided. In the second stage, test items are provided based on the level registered for or the results of the Speedy Screening Listening test. The test takers' responses are evaluated by the scorers. The system then further assesses the overall performance across both stages to determine the test takers' oral proficiency level and provide the test results.

TOCFL Speedy Screening Writing Test adopts a two-stage testing structure. In the first stage, a test item of Band A is provided. In the second stage, test items are provided based on the level registered for or the results of the Speedy Screening Reading test. The test takers' responses are evaluated by the scorers. The system then further assesses the overall performance across both stages to determine the test takers' writing proficiency level and provide the test results.

The results of the above tests include "scaled scores" and "fast screening proficiency levels." The "proficiency levels" for the listening and reading tests are divided into 10 levels from S1 to S10, ranging from low to high. The "proficiency levels" for the speaking test range from S1 to S9, while those of the writing test range from S3 to S8. In addition, the test results provide alignment information with different language proficiency frameworks such as TBCL, CEFR, and ACTFL.
